Abstract
Research on species composition and size
pony fish was carried out from August 2009 to Juny 2010 at three stations in
Kendari Bay, Southeast Sulawesi. Fish collection was done experimental gillnets
(with different mesh sizes ¾, 1, 1¼, 1½, and 2 inch) ) and seser (Ø 1 meter and
mesh size 0.04 inch). Ten species of Leiognathidae families were collected
during research. There was three genera of Leiognathidae namely Gazza (1 species), Leiognathus
(7 species) and Secutor (2 species). Based
on number of fish, N. blochii
(39.72%) and L.splendens (33.95%) were
dominant species on Station I (39.72%), S.
indicius on Station II (38.75%), and N.
blochii (20.50%) dan L.splendens
(25.10 %) on Station III (25.10%). Based
on frequency of occurrence during study, L.splendens
was resident species (100%), while P.bindus
and L.dussumieri were rarely (18.18%). Based on size range and frequency of
occurrence of fish, indicated pony fish used of Kendari Bay as nursery
ground.
